NY State Assembly Hearing on Indian Point Closure

SENATE STANDING COMMITTEE ON ENERGY AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS

ASSEMBLY STANDING COMMITTEE ON ENERGY

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING

SUBJECT: Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant Shutdown

PURPOSE: The purpose of this hearing is to examine the potential impacts of the shutdown of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant.

February 28, 2017, 10:00 AM,  Hearing Room C Legislative Office Building, 2nd Floor

Albany, NY 12248

ORAL TESTIMONY WILL BE BY INVITATION ONLY

On January 9th, New York State and Entergy, among other entities, entered into an agreement that provided for the permanent cessation of operations at the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in Buchanan, Westchester County. Indian Point is comprised of two operating nuclear powered units that generate approximately 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electric power, accounting for about 25% of New York City and Westchester’s electricity. The agreement stipulates that, barring exigent circumstances, the units will cease operations no later than April 30, 2020 and April 30, 2021, respectively.

As the end of operations at Indian Point approaches, it is important that a plan is in place to address the effects of the closure, as well as future site decommissioning. The purpose of this hearing is to examine the potential impacts of the plant’s closure, specifically those on electric grid reliability, jobs, and local tax revenues.

Persons invited to present pertinent testimony to the Committees at the above hearing should complete and return the enclosed reply form as soon as possible. It is important that the reply form be fully completed and returned so that persons may be notified in the event of emergency postponement or cancellation.

Oral testimony will be limited to 10 minutes’ duration. In preparing the order of witnesses, the Committees will attempt to accommodate individual requests to speak at particular times in view of special circumstances. These requests should be made on the attached reply form or communicated to the Committees’ staff as early as possible.

Fifteen copies of any prepared testimony should be submitted at the hearing registration desk. The Committees would appreciate advance receipt of prepared statements.

In order to meet the needs of those who may have a disability, the Assembly, in accordance with its policy of non-discrimination on the basis of disability, as well as the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), has made its facilities and services available to all individuals with disabilities. For individuals with disabilities, accommodations will be provided, upon reasonable request, to afford such individuals access and admission to Assembly facilities and activities.
