Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has announced that it expects a settlement ruling concerning the San Onofre nuclear plant in California before the end of March.

A claim was brought against MHI by Southern California Edison (SCE) that may result in one of the largest settlement claims ever. SCE is seeking $7.6 billion from MHI for its part in the steam generator fiasco that resulted in the plant shutting down its two pressurized water reactors – Units 2 and 3 – in January 2012.  MHI claims it is responsible for $137 million. The case was arbitrated by the International Chamber of Commerce.

Both units, which were commissioned in 1983 and 1984, respectively, were shut down after extensive, premature wear was found in steam generator tubes that were installed in 2010 and 2011.  (Nuclear Street)
